I wish there had been more splash to this mermaid tale (sorry for the bad pun), but little happens by way of character growth or plot development, and right when it seems something worthwhile is beginning, the book ends. Abrupt stop. It’s not a bad story, nor horribly told, nor poorly written, however, beyond that there’s nothing to truly recommend it.
Personal rating: 3/5
This is one of those books one needs to be in the right headspace to read. Its pace can be sluggish with a distinctly classic prose style (think Victorian) despite its modern setting. It’s also one of those books that dredges up a lot of questions about life, identity, conformity, God, the soul, true love, and death. But it doesn’t offer any concrete answers. Beautifully written, and ultimately for the patient philosopher with a keenness for the supernatural.
A girl in the world who loves stripey knee socks and her cat. She also loves to read, write, draw, and a bunch of other things in between.
